Iodine-Induced Hyperthyroidism

Jod-Basedow is the iodine-load hyperthyroidism trap: autonomous thyroid tissue uses sudden iodine repletion to make excess T3/T4 instead of shutting down.

The anchor: Iodine can be a brake or fuel. Normal thyroid gets Wolff-Chaikoff suppression. Autonomous nodules get substrate and overproduce hormone.

Iodine Becomes Fuel

The board move is not simply low uptake. Tie the uptake to iodine saturation, nodular autonomy, and new hormone synthesis.
The Iodine Switch
Iodine DeficiencyChronic scarcity drives goiter and nodular autonomy.
Iodine LoadAmiodarone, contrast, kelp, or iodized diet suddenly supplies substrate.
ThyrotoxicosisAutonomous tissue makes excess T3/T4 despite low TSH.
Normal BrakeWolff-Chaikoff temporarily suppresses organification.
Failed BrakeAutonomous nodules escape regulation.
Low UptakeIodine saturation can make RAIU low even while hormone synthesis is high.
Jod-BasedowIodine-induced increased synthesis.
GravesTSI positive, diffuse high uptake.
ThyroiditisDamaged cells leak preformed hormone.

Sort The Thyroid Uptake Trap

Low uptake does not always mean the same thing. Pair it with trigger and mechanism.

Jod-Basedow Versus The Decoys

Graves, Wolff-Chaikoff, thyroiditis, and central hyperthyroidism all share pieces. The full clue stack chooses Jod-Basedow.

Memory Hooks

Jod-Basedow: iodine is fuel for nodules.
Wolff-Chaikoff is the brake; Jod-Basedow is brake failure.
Low RAIU plus iodine load can still be synthesis-driven because the gland is saturated.

Find The Fuel State

Iodine load plus nodular autonomy is not suppression. It is substrate.
